Manojit reminisces :

"DID U KNOW I MANAGED TO LOCK PANDITSIR IN THE TOILET WHILE HE WAS ENJOYING A NICE BIDI? UNFORTUNATELY NEWS LEAKED OUT -I THINK FROM HARIPADA -WHO I BELIEVE WORKED FOR CIA (SECRET SERVICE FOR HEDU ) U CAN IMAGINE WHAT HAPPENED NEXT. I WAS PROMPT SUMMONED TO THE TORTURE CHAMBER AND AND RECEIVED SEVERAL LASHINGS FROM HEDU IN THE PRESENCE OF SMILING PANDITSIR-WHO REMINDED ME ABOUT--"BAPU PRADIPER TALAI ANDHAKAR " SUBSEQUENTLY MY PARENTS WERE SUMMONED AND DULY INFORMED ABOUT MY EXTRACARICULAR ACTIVITIES !! ALAS - ALL THOSE YEARS OF TORTURE ON MY HEAD, HAS NOW LEFT ME WITH A BALD PATCH."

Partha remembers :

" Saturdays used to be real special for myself, Samir and Prabir. Being half day we used to hang around the school. One Saturady  we were roaming in the school compound, Samir suddenly remembers that he has left behind his school bag in class room. So he goes in the class to retrieve his bag. Haripada meanwhile locks the class room and nonchalantly goes to his room ( besides the toilet ) for an afternoon siesta. Samir shouts for Harpada to open the room but of no avail. Meanwhile myself  and Prabir go behind the class room and and peep through the window of Haripada's room and shout  "Hari  Tumi  Paado!!!". An exasparated Haripada comes to Samir's rescue and opens the class room and let Samir free"

Prodyot recounts :

In ninth standard it was picnic time. We were excited to be visiting Bassein fort the next day. Myself, Atindra and few others class mates visit Debmasters house in the evening to plan for the next day. Next morning all the class mates were waiting near State Bank at Dadar circle. Debmaster was no where to be seen. After nearly an hour Debmaster comes huffing and puffing with fire in his eyes catch hold of me, Atindra and others and said "I have been pacing up and down of platform no.1 and you people are chatting here. I will expose you in front of all the people." And he did in front of the office going crowd.

Prodyot remembers :

It 10th standard. Saraswati Puja time. The winter was very severe that year. In the evenings program  Bijan was playing the role of Daari. He was dressed in Dhoti -Kurta and socks and shoes. In the play " First Actor : Daari Kothay?  From audience somebody shouts : Daari Cha khachche!! In fact behind the wings Bijan was having a hot cup tea to combat severe cold.

Samir remembers :                                      There, we go again. Once upon a time in the year 1958 sultry afternoon,a young boy returning home from school. Ofcourse, the stupid boy is me. The point is, I left my school bag hanging by the tree while waiting for my double decker tram. Next day drama ( Hedu summons )and blah blahblah…sono ami oi cheletake bakshish diechi; he is showing me ( akta petoler dooana, kalke bari theke niea eshe amai pherot dio ).I rememeber the beating to get that money back.

Dileep remembers

One day while playing football in our G.S.College Ground, Partho was needlessly trying to head every ball that came near him by jumping at which one of his teammates protested by shouting 'PARTHO DON`T LAUGH' ! ( LAFFANO IN BENGALI IS THE EQUIVALENT OF JUMPING )

Prodyot recounts a memorable incident :

The year Feb 1963.  We the students of Std. X were in charge of all

activities connected with Saraswati Puja. The first day's Puja in the

morning and Cultural Programme in the evening were a grand success.

The ‘Dadhikarma ‘ on the second day morning went off very well.

Then came the afternoon, the time for immersion.

Daooda asked for volunteers. Bijon, Prabir, Swapan, Dileep, Barin,

Subrata and myself responded. ( Please let me know if I have missed

out some friends). Other than Daooda, only Bijon was an expert swimmer. Myself and Dileep knew bit of swimming. Others were just walkers!

The afternoon was a high tide time. Daooda and us volunteers dutifully

carried Ma Saraswati to the Shivaji Park sea and after the customery ‘pradakshina’ carried out the immersion in chest high water.

We were about to come back ashore. Then comes suddenly a high wave and hell breaks loose. We are in neck deep water!

Most of the boys who did not know swimming held on the Ma Saraswati’s bamboo frame to stay afloat. In come Daooda.

with his enormous reach and awesome power; grab one by one and pushed them  towards shore. When I was about to swim back to shore I find a lone friend panicky, stranded in neck deep water and did not know what to do.  I don’t know what happened to me. With all my might of  a lean 47 kg frame, I kind of dragged the guy by his upper arm a few yards towards the shore, and he managed to scamper on the safety of sands. Thus all's well that finally ended well.

Are you interested to know, who was the friend was stranded in neck deep water.

He is none other than our own Subrata!

Prodyot remembers annual sports day :

Every year annual sports day used to be a special event with Hindi Sir’s

announcement booming on the mike and Daooda on his toes the whole day and students vying for honours. You will remember the achievements of our Ajay ( Milkha ) Biswas on sports day. Ajay’a mother used to come to the Purandare stadium with a Tholi ( cloth bag ) to carry a dozon prizes

won by Ajay, Arun, Shefali and the youngest brother. I take the pride to the fact that in X std  I beat Ajay in long jump to the second place. That was my only prize in sports field in school. Also innumerable number of prizes was won by Binoy. Who will forget the unforgettable GAMLA i.e. Shymal Naha blazing the track in 400 metres race and running like a stallion in his spikes.

There is an interesting incident involving Shymal.

It was year 1961 Annual Sports day. Shymal Naha was hot fa vourite to win the 400 m dash. But there is a new guy to be contended with.

Sananth Mukherjee has come from Calcutta and joined Shymal’s class.

Though Sanath him self was a good athlete but did not know the prowess

of Shymal.  It so happened he too joined the 400m fray.

Daooda flags off 400 m dash. Shymal as usual took to medium speed  upto

200 m mark with an intension of galloping away next 200m mark to overtake his opponents his usual strategy. But Sanath had different ideas. At the flag off Sanath raced off to his best possible speed and kept going that way. When Shymal was at 200 m mark, Sananth was nearing 300 m mark. Then Shymal took off like a bullet for his next 200 metres. But Sanath kept going at such a steady pace such that, Shymal could never overcome him and he finished a close second.

This is one race that Shyamal must have regretted  throughout his life!

Prodyot remembers :

You know Binoy as a sportsman and footballer in the Purandare field. But how many of you know Binoy’s culinary skills? Let me take you back to school days. Possibly it was IX Std. Some of us classmates decided to have a private picnic to Powai lake. Myself, Binoy, Prabir, Dileep and Samir ( Dileep managed to rope in Samir who had left school by then ) and few others reported to Atindra’s cottage at Vikroli early morning of the picnic day. Some guy suggested instead of going by bus to Powai why not take a short cut and trek through the adjoining hill. So we started with our ration of raw Rice, Dal , condiments etc. for preparation of lunch Halfway through the hills, huffing and puffing we were cursing the guy who suggested the short cut to Powai lake. Well, finally we made it to the wrong side of Powai lake. In Dileep’s words we discovered the Powai lake. The picnic spot was on the other bank of the lake. All the same, the lake water was inviting so we decided to take a swim. While we were frolicking in the muddy water of Powai lake, Binoy  quietly collected some dry branches and leaves and kept the fire going. And he cooked a delicious ‘Bhuna Khichuri’ on the spot. After swim it was lunch time and we were all terribly hungry. And I swear I have not tasted better Khichuri in my life and gobbled it down as much as possible.

Dileep Writes,

Do you all rember the detention after school hours when Hindi Sir asked us to write 10,000 lines  `` amra schooer sab cheye Oncha Chele . I remember Khonika had innocently enquired whether the girls also should write the same to which an angry Hindi Sir had shouted that for the girls it should be Oncha Meye....
Rember our addressing Mrs. Titers as Dainee bury  and oneday she had secretely called me  she liked and loved me a lot..  and asked what was the meaning of DINABARI...

Samir writes :

Manojit,
Before you thought of locking up Panditsir Tikidhari, here's what I did
in third standard. Hedu's son Atish had gone to pee and I used a wire to
lock him up. The bastard cried and cried. I ran. The next thing I know, I
was called out during the next class. Big fat Gouridi looked down at me and obviously asked me if I was the culprit. I looked up innocently (or
tried to), all I could see was a big fat hand coming towards my left cheek.
Cut to Stars and flowers spinning above my head. As I was going down, the back of her hand on my right cheek kept me from falling and I swear I could hear birds singing.
At one point she held me by the ear and said don't do it again. So,
Doctor Sahab, great minds think alike!

Dileep recollects

By the way , reading about the Drama during Saraswati Puja where that famous DAARI Kothay... I remember Our Atindra during the Drama Tapasi  was required to say Udaypur theke aschi ... but being a first timer on the stage as also due to extreme cold weather on that evening he went on stammering   U  ... U... UUU... Udaipur... and could not finish his dialogue as the Queen ( acted by Malabika Sengupta ) completed the dialogue herself.

Sarbani recounts :

While writing this mail suddenly I remembered our "Deb - Master's, Allahabader Peru". Whenever we were inattentive in the class or could not solve a problem he would hammer on our head with the back (wooden side of the duster) of the duster and tell us that that was 'Allahabader Peru'.

Dileep writes some more :

Shikha,Banani,Prabir,Prodyoth... do you remember our Examinations Schedules when we were in Primary School... starting with  ANKO(maths) LIKHE(written)...and Bangla Mukhe(oral) ? I distinctly remember one such day when we were made to sit on the steps of Primary school for Mali to call one by one inside for the tests (oral) when Shikha and Banani were discussing how they enjoyed chewing the bones of mutton. That day I learnt how to treat the bones when served on Sunday Meals at home.

Do you remember Gouridi`s Office where the nests of Weaving  Birds ( Babuii Paakhi ) were displayed? Infact for a very long time I never believed that Birds can indeed weave nests like that and carried the impression that these pieces must have been made by Dasguptoda or Shibuda ( who had his degree from Shanti Niketan ) !!

In the corner of Primary School Hall ( KG class rooms/School Mojlish  Functions place ) there is a wall-cupboard on the top side which, during the very first few days of my joining school, Mali had warned  that any mischief and you would be locked up there... It scared me so much that all thru my days in Primary School, I never could look at that corner!! You all may not belive this but after I became the Secretary of the B.E.Society

during1981-1985, one day I had requested Leena Di ( Montessory Supdt.) to show me the contents of that  Cupboard to clear my doubts.!!!

I remeber during one Saturday Mojlish in that hall. a show was organised where a DOG had uttered RAM ,RAM !!!

In the same hall during our Farewell Function(1964) when Headu was relentlessly going on and on, I had secretely wiped my tears realising that we were not likely to attend the school again!

Dileep remembers some more :

Looking back at the school days, I remember ,on our way to Borivillee National Park by train, Amol had got down at some station to buy something when the train was about to move, so he shouted at the direction of  Motorman`s  cabin “ Time Please, Time Please”

I recall a small girl had asked Dasguptada very innocently “Dasguptada  apnar padabi Ki”?

Reading about the way the Hurricanes are given their names , I  remembered Atindra and his brothers who had  named their hens and ducks at  their Vikhroli home; after the world`s top statesmen of those days; as Lumumba, Bulganin,Kruschev…..

I am scared even today when I remember our Hindi Sir, correcting  our Hindi Essay/composition  books in class  and how he got wild when Proshanta`s  composition  had these lines ‘ mereko nadi ka woh  side jaana  tha ki   us-time nao nahin mila …..

The remarks of Pandit Sir on Manojit`s  handwriting as  ‘galda chingree`r  thang …’

make me  laugh  even today.

Stray thoughts from Dileep

'While watching on TV the Durban Cricket Test Match between India and South Africa and the South African Debutant Cricketer MORKEL ……My mind traveled back to our childhood   when we had two brothers Subroto and Sudipto Sorkhel…. joining our school…. The elder one- senior to us by 3 years and the younger one  junior to us by one year….. They studied in our school for only a few years and then left Bombay for good and we lost them for ever….

Like many young boys; Sudipto had STAMMERING defect in his speech…
He would pronounce his name as Hu… Hu… Hu… Hudipto  Horkhel.. (replacing sha with ha )
His most famous quote “ aamaar haba ( baba )  Haapaan thekey ( Japan thekey )  Haapaani Pen( Japani Pen )  enechhey!!!
